How to Measure an Interior Door, Step by Step

Ordering a new door starts with three measurements. Here is how to take them right the first time.

1. Measure the frame, not the old door

Measure the opening inside the frame (the rebate) at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. Use the smallest width — frames are rarely perfectly straight.

2. Measure the height on both sides

Measure from the floor to the top of the rebate on the hinge side and on the lock side. Most Dutch frames are 201.5 or 211.5 cm high.

  • 73, 83 and 93 cm are the most common widths.
  • Check the door thickness: most frames take a 40 mm door.
  • Note the turning direction: are the hinges on the left or on the right?
3. Check the floor

New flooring? Then you may need to shorten the door a little. Leave about 1 cm under the door for ventilation.

The 1 cm under the door for ventilation is something I never thought about.

Great tips! I measured the old door and almost ordered the wrong size.
